“Today just feels brighter.” read a comment on the video entertainment app Tiktok.
“This is the best day I’ve had in months.”
“I feel like I can breathe again.”
Comments as such flooded social media this past Saturday morning, when Joe Biden was announced the presidential elect of the United States. Millions of people, young and old, and regardless if they were eligible to vote or not were ecstatic as they learned of the long-awaited results of the extremely stressful election.
Major cities like Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington DC were flooded with joyful celebrations. People took to the streets with Biden Harris signs, pride flags, and Black Lives Matter posters. Cars honked as they passed by, people stood on their balconies and waved, and music was even played, making the entire occasion seem like one collective dance party. Celebrators wiped their tears in disbelief.
Those who could not make it to gatherings in person voiced their happiness on social media. Watching such lively reactions to the election definitely was surreal, and a stark contrast to the dreary atmosphere that had been shrouding the world for the past few months. It is safe to say that Saturday morning felt like the end of an era, and a spark of hope for future years to come.

It is also important to note the reactions of the younger generations of America. Many of Gen Z’s first time voters joined the celebration for Biden’s victory, but also promised that they would continue to advocate for progressive ideals and that Biden would still be held accountable. His win came as a huge relief to teens and young adults across the nation, but many agree that the fight is still not over. As amazing as Biden’s win feels to many, Gen Z will continue speaking about issues such as racial injustice, climate change, and immigration. Younger Americans cannot wait to make their own difference in the country.
Later on Saturday night, Biden issued a victory speech to the public. He addressed a deeply divided nation, and used his win to establish a goal of compromise. He acknowledged those who had been supporting his opponent Donald Trump, and even tried to sympathize with them. Above all, it seemed like Biden wanted to underline the idea that he was on America’s side, regardless of political party and no matter what one’s beliefs or background may be. He pledged to unify rather than divide, and asked the American public to give him a chance as president.
The nationwide celebrations for Biden have felt heartwarming and liberating for millions of Americans, and even those worldwide who have been following the election. There is no denying that things will definitely take a change under Biden’s new administration. For now, it is too early to tell what will happen in these next few years, but the majority in America seems to be in agreement to keep an eye out for what measures the new president will take to pull the country through the crisis it is currently in.
